Does tutoring help a child?

Usually, when the problem is a gap in understanding, exam technique or confidence — those respond well to one-to-one attention and a written plan. It helps much less when the real issue is workload, sleep, an undiagnosed learning difficulty, or a subject the child has no interest in whatsoever. Tutoring can paper over those for a term but will not fix them. I would rather say that after the trial than take a booking for something an hour a week cannot solve.
